Blatchford pioneers build on sustainability and community

You might have heard bits and pieces about Blatchford, and what makes the neighbourhood new and cutting-edge and innovative (among the other adjectives that mean original and creative and cool).

Technical things like the District Energy Sharing System, high-performance buildings, the geoexchange field, and so on.

But Blatchford is also the answer to a very basic question for human beings:

In our time, how should we best live our lives?

Meet Alexia and Scott, who are Blatchford pioneers.

“Sustainability is something that we really care about as a family, so, I think we are making a difference by moving into Blatchford,” said Alexia.

When Alexia says “we,” she means the people of her heart, the people who sustain her.

“We are a multi-generational family,” Alexia said. “We currently live with my parents and our four-year-old son, Luca. “I moved here in 2007 from Germany, and, since I was a little girl, I always knew that my parents would follow me wherever I go and live with me.”

Alexia and Scott are the new owners of a Nest8 townhome by Ocheller Homes.

“Blatchford really presented an opportunity for us to meet that need of multigenerational housing,” said Scott.

“The homes are being built with the opportunity to add legal suites in them right from the start. Alexia’s parents will feel like they have a better quality living space, but we’ll still be able to connect as a family within our house, which is the best of both worlds.”

The Blatchford neighbourhood will be home for as many as 30,000 Edmontonians to live, work and learn in a sustainable community that uses 100% renewable energy, is carbon neutral, significantly reduces its ecological footprint and empowers residents to pursue a range of sustainable lifestyle choices.

When Edmontonians talk about building a city to achieve climate resilience, Blatchford is part of what they mean.

“Ocheller is a housing lifestyle brand born of a dream to connect Canadians to their land, sustainable resources and sustainable living,” said Tegan Martin-Drysdale, Ocheller’s owner and founder.

“Blatchford will be a pillar, a beacon and an example of a response to what we know are concerns around the environment and sustainability and climate change.”

And home for Alexia, Scott, Luca, Omi and Opi.

“There’s lots of great elements to it,” said Scott. “There will be shops nearby and things that people can walk to. We’re really excited about the opportunity to live there.”

In this video, Scott and Alexia share what living in Blatchford means for their whole family, today and for the future.
