It was 2009. City Council approved the Transportation Master Plan along with the City’s Strategic Plans and Edmonton’s 2040 LRT vision was born. The vision was an LRT Network Plan that called for the development of six LRT lines connecting all quadrants of the city in an urban and integrated manner. For lines that don’t physically connect into the existing high-floor system, the City would use low-floor LRT. At this point, it was just an idea.
Fast forward to 2019: that idea is now coming to life.
The Valley Line will provide LRT service from Millwoods through downtown and west to Lewis Farms, providing smaller more frequent stops that are better connected to the surrounding community. Phase 1, Valley Line Southeast, began construction in 2016 and is expected to be open to the public by the end of 2020.
Now, after an extensive two-year review, the Valley Line West LRT is marking a major milestone with the completion of its preliminary design. Throughout the design phase, Edmontonians provided valuable feedback and perspectives, which were used to better inform project direction and decisions.
In honour of Edmontonians’ efforts and in celebration of this major milestone, the project team is pleased to launch this Valley Line West animation video. The video showcases the final preliminary design, which reflects the feedback received from Edmontonians and changes to design, policies and land use along the corridor over the last few years.
