Edmonton Fire Rescue Services receives international accreditation

For the second time, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) has achieved accreditation from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI).

“It’s a great honour to have obtained CFAI accreditation,” says Fire Chief Ken Block. “It helps us determine where we are by evaluating performance measures which serves to challenge us to continuously improve our service to the public.”

CFAI accreditation focuses on continuous improvement, which is pertinent to successfully operate in a growing and diverse city. EFRS was required to evaluate its processes, the quality of its services, and implement strategic plans to assist on moving closer to meeting internationally recognized standards.

Chief Block notes that service and teamwork played an important role in achieving the CFAI standards. “It has taken much commitment, dedication and the hard work of many in our organization to get here, so we are extremely proud.”

This accreditation will also serve the Edmonton public as the rigorous standards required to obtain this designate exceeds the status quo. More specifically, Edmontonians can expect a continued professional, high level of service and stronger safety regulations from EFRS compared to non-accredited departments.

“These new expectations will improve the overall quality of life for all of our residents. Edmonton is one of Canada’s fastest growing cities, and this accreditation will continue to foster its growth while making Edmonton safer and more livable,” says the Chief.

CFAI is a program which assists emergency services agencies in achieving organizational and professional excellence. This is the second time that EFRS has obtained CFAI accreditation; the first time was five years ago in 2010. Edmonton Fire is one of just seven accredited fire departments in Canada.
