Things to know before catching a ride in Edmonton

Need to catch a ride in Edmonton? You now have more options to get from point A to point B. Edmonton’s new Vehicle for Hire Bylaw, which took effect on March 1, clears the way for Private Transportation Providers (PTPs) to operate legally and safely in our city. We are the first Canadian city to legalize this type of service.

So if you are planning to catch a ride, here are some important things you should know:

Arranging a Trip and Costs:

The City wants to ensure your safety when choosing a taxi or PTP.  Drivers of licensed vehicles are required to provide the City with proof of proper insurance, police information check, and pass an annual mechanical inspection by a licensed garage and mechanic.  You can confirm you are riding in a legitimate, licensed vehicle by looking out for these distinct markings:

All PTPs must have an identification sticker placed in the lower corner of the passenger side on the front windshield.

All drivers must also present their City of Edmonton driver’s licence, which includes a photo of the driver, by either having it displayed in the vehicle or made available through an app.

Who to contact if you have a concern:

If you encounter an unlicensed vehicle or witness any problematic behaviour in a licensed vehicle for hire, you are encouraged to report it online or call 780-496-5244 and the City’s vehicle for hire office will initiate an investigation. Fines for operating without a City driver’s licence or City vehicle licence under the new bylaw increase to $5,000.
