Where will you go? LRT expansion is giving you a chance to win

Edmonton’s LRT network is expanding. Construction on the Valley Line Southeast has been underway since 2016, and the tracks, stops and stations are taking shape. In 2020, work is anticipated to begin on the Valley Line West from Downtown to Lewis Farms and on the Metro Northwest Phase 1 from NAIT to Blatchford.

When projects of this size get going, they’re hard to miss. They bring temporary road closures, construction staging and detours.

They also bring what can be a little harder to see: a more connected city with a public transportation network that will allow people to go here, there and way over there.

Where will you go?

We connected with some Edmontonians to get their take.

Michelle and her husband Greg call the construction “short-term pain for long-term gain.”

Michelle, Greg and their children use the train to get wherever they’re going. From gymnastics to swimming and everything in between, the LRT is how they get there.

“As the LRT continues to expand, this is going to provide us with even more opportunities, places to go, ways to get there and new areas of the city to explore,” Michelle says.

To Ian, using the train is a no brainer. As a University of Alberta student, Ian prefers the train to driving to get to class. And in the future?

“I’ve heard that the LRT is expanding to the four major hospitals in Edmonton, and being that I’m interested in a healthcare career, the LRT could really help me get to work.” Ian says.

Mark is a retired Edmontonian who takes the train to meet friends for lunch at Southgate Mall, to physiotherapy appointments at the University of Alberta and to catch events downtown.

“Taking the LRT has been very beneficial.  And the further west the LRT expands, the quicker it’ll be for me to get downtown and all around the city,” Mark says.
